Abelana River Lodge is the new kid on the block on the South African safari circuit. River Lodge opened this year and I’m so excited to share this property with you.
Set on the banks of the Selati River in the Limpopo Province, the recently launched River Lodge is magnificent and a relatively quick and smooth drive from Johannesburg.
As you walk out from the main area, you’re greeted by a rim flow pool, which seems to cascade effortlessly over into the Selati River. A giant Sycamore Fig towers over you. You can hear playful monkeys screech with excitement as they jump from tree on the opposite river bank. The Woodlands kingfishers call out as they mark their great return. You might also hear the resident hippo’s nostrils bursting through the water’s surface. The setting is breathtaking.
Throughout the 15 000 hectare reserve, you’ll find varying terrain – the landscape in the south is dotted by impressive granite outcrops and a beautiful 10km stretch of the semi-perennial Selati River dominates the northern section of the reserve.
The team have thought of every detail. The lodge is tastefully decorated and built with precision. The dark black floors and thatch beams in the main area are striking and a stark contrast to the lighter walls. There’s texture, art and luxury all wrapped up under a large thatch roof.
Aesthetics aside, it also has a ground-breaking community and conservation story. Owned by the Mashishimale community, the word “abelana” means “to share amongst each other” in the local Northern Sotho language. This spirit of sharing underpins the relationship between the Mashishimale and its lodge operations partner which leases the land for eco-tourism purposes.
