The sense of smell sparks a flurry of emotional memories for many. I’ve often caught a faint whiff of a scent that immediately transports me back to a long forgotten event in my life or a particular person. For me, the scent of a wood fire reminds me of my grandfather’s farm in Zimbabwe. As a child, I’d crouch in front of his old donkey boiler outside the kitchen, completely fascinated by the incessantly smoldering embers and churns of smoke billowing from the decaying chimney. I loved that smell. And now, every time I’m sitting around a campfire in the African bush, I’m reminded of him.
